Baltic Sea Cruise, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium

In 2017, we planned our first European land adventure to combine with a Baltic Sea cruise sailing the Kiel Canal.  Our pre-cruise land stops included Cologne, Rudesheim, and Munich in Germany, as well as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft, Leiden, and Gouda in the Netherlands, and Antwerp in Belgium.  Sights and activities ranged from cathedrals, cheese markets, and museums to a wine dinner at a German Schloss, ceramic-making at Royal Delft, and a Neuschwanstein experience departing from Munich.

A great example of a daily itinerary is our stop in Antwerp. This day trip blended the epicurean delights of Belgium with the sites and activities of Antwerp.  Sightseeing started immediately upon arrival at the city's historic train station and continued as we passed through the diamond district (Diamantkwartier), city square (Grote Markt), and fortress (Het Steen). It also included a visit to a 16th Century printing press with one of the fourteen remaining 36-line Bamberg Bibles.  Between cultural and historical stops, we feasted on waffles, frites, chocolate, and beer, all essential inclusions for any Belgian vacation.
